The Important Things in Running a Business: Andra Febri Aura

Since high school Andra (194214166) has been helping his father in running his family’s aquarium decoration business. Their shop named ‘Bang Jo’ sells many types of aquarium as well as other things such as sands, rocks, wood decorations, and many more. The shop earns approximately 5 million rupiahs per month.

According to Andra, there are three important things to do when running a business.

The first one is patience. In running a business, patience is very important. “We don’t know what kind of customers we get. So controlling emotions is very important,” said Andra. Besides dealing with customers, there are times when the incoming orders are out of control, either very much or not at all. So patience is the key to business success.

The second important things is finding connections. Social media has an important role in finding connections to get the best materials from suppliers. Andra uses the Facebook group to find supplier connections. He said, the downside of using social media to get connections is not being able to know the quality of the goods clearly, so to ensure the quality, he must go to the supplier directly. However, on the other hand, with social media, these connections are easier to obtain.

The final step is promoting and advertise. Once again, social media plays an important role in the business. He uses Facebook to advertise his shop. “For hobby items, Facebook has the best marketplace,” said Andra. He uses a Facebook group to advertise his product. He said in general, every times he post something in the group he could bring up to 25 customers.

In conclusion, according to Andra, there are three important things in running a business, namely patience, connection, and promotion. Patience is important to deal with customers and order conditions. Finally, to get connections and do promotions use social media as effectively as possible.

How does men dress up in English Letters? : Adrian Febriyanto

English Letters USD’s students are quite famous for their unique and bold fashion sense. Due to the non-strict regulation of dress code in this department, many of their students expressed their own self through fashion style. Adrian as one of English Letters USD also believes that the advantage of being part of this department is to be able to have the freedom of speech and act. The unique thing about fashion in English Letters department, it isn’t only for women. There are also a lot of men seen dressed up in this department.

In this interview, Adrian explained how men’s fashion has changed drastically especially from the Age of Conformity (1950s) to nowadays. From the age where everything seems just black and white and also conservative to the age where there are a lot of options for men to explore. He said, “now men’s fashion has changed and it’s getting wider, men can wear anything they want and no longer have to show his masculinity, they can wear skirts, crop tee and so on as long as it makes them comfy”.

However, in Indonesia, society still views men’s fashion as showing masculinity to look cool. Adrian believes that Indonesia has double standard in men’s fashion for example when Jefri Nichol wore skirts in his IG, people seem fine in the comment section.  But then, when non-celebrity men using the same things like skirts, people tend to judge or be sentimental about it.

Adrian believes in the principle that fashion is genderless. “Fashion can be worn by anyone without seeing their gender especially in 2021 right now everything has changed. Men can wear skirts, pearl necklace or even crop tee, heels and the otherwise, women also can wear jeans, tuxedo, hat, pantofel” he said.  He also stated that the stigma of fashion boundaries between men and women has low-key faded.

In the relation to the freedom that English Letters student has, Adrian believed that fashion in the department has no boundaries. He said, “EL students have the perks to dress up as we want and no one will judge you”. Adrian always expresses himself through fashion, even when he goes to campus (before the pandemic). He explained his own fashion as something that makes him comfy. “I always buy something oversize, either clothes or pants, because I really like when it looks loose when I wear it, and I always see what occasion that I head to”. Adrian always prepared his outfit to campus the night before. “I always prepare my outfit to be variative and make an extra effort to it, because whenever I did this, it makes me more excited to go to campus”.

Adrian’s campus outfits mostly consist of t-shirt rather than collar shirts. But not only with a basic t-shirt as he mixes and matches it with other accessories such as Balinese cloth, collar, and tote bag. For the bottom, Adrian’s go-to is boyfriend jeans. The point is every day has to be different, may add some details or change the details.

For hangout after the class outfit, Adrian has several tips. Start with the top, try to wear a basic tee that could be oversize or the fit one. Then mix it with boyfriend jeans and for the footwear, use converse 70’s. For the details you can also add a necklace and ring but, if you want to wear anything else that are more suitable for you are also suitable. “, if want to wear a skirt and crop tee, that is amazing as well, because when you are confident anything you wear will look totally cool”.

Most of his stylish outfit, he got it from IG thrift shops. “I highly recommend you to buy on thrift shop especially on IG. No need to buy something expensive because from the thrift shop u can get cool clothes, pants, and stuff”.  He recommended several of his go-to stores: @fuckyeahendy, @vaga3ond, @_dindayasmin, and @davidguison.

At the end, Adrian believed that the most important thing is to be yourself and don’t think about someone’s opinion, just be comfortable in your own style. “Find your own style and when you think it is cool wear it because your uniqueness is something that you should be proud of and just ignore what people think,” he said.

The program aims to hold a conference or seminar organized by ELAC. (English Letters Undergraduate Conference). As for this year’s conference, it was conducted through a zoom meeting due to the pandemic situation. Last year the conference only for central java range ” but this year it has become a national seminar which is open to the public so anyone can take part in this seminar. The participants are usually from high school and university circles this year will be held in September.

ELUC has many themes, namely what areas include English Language and Literature. example:

  • contemporary rules,

SMM New Project: Podcast

Yogyakarta (28/05/2021) -Valerianus Yudhistira Aldi Nugroho (184214043), Chief of String Movie Maniac (SMM) said, “We made podcast to replace fraternity night and weekly movie night program. We chose podcasts because it can be adapted to the current situation.” In addition, SMM also chose to make podcasts because it is simpler than making a YouTube video, accessible to anyone, and because there is indeed hype among young people. Through this podcast, Yudhis hopes that SMM members can share their opinions about movies with certain genres and also build more intimacy between members.

Currently, the podcast is managed by Film-making Division. In fact, the Film-making Division was in charge of filmmaking, but for a while the job shifted to podcast making. In addition, SMM members did not have the chance to adjust the current division because the shift of lectures from offline to online was quite sudden.

This podcast is published on SMM’s Spotify every 2 weeks. The link is https://open.spotify.com/show/3DRrOjjNwYbDX3jlFM7CvQ?si=MnQohRXbTAWJEjZT1ZmAAA&utm_source=whatsapp. Until now, there have been 5 podcast episodes that have been posted on different topics. Podcast topics are determined from the film genre and the Filmmaking Division can determine the topic for each episode. “There are about 5 episodes. Topic of the first episode was romantic movie because it coincided with Valentine. For the second episode, the topic was fantasy, the third episode was thriller, the fourth episode was Sci-Fi, and the last one was Horror.” said Yudhis. The podcast itself was temporarily paused by the staffs because it coincided with the midterm exam.

String Movie Maniac does not target this podcast for certain circles. Podcasts that contain movie reviews are intended for the general public. However, for now, this podcast is still spread among students of English Literature at Sanata Dharma University only. Yudhis hopes in the future, this podcast can be heard by the wider community as well. Promotion of the podcast itself, Yudhis as the chief said that the plan will be carried out regularly through Instagram by all SMM administrators so that it can be distributed properly to the general public.

Because this podcast has not been distributed to the general public, the listener response itself is still not optimal. Yudhis also added, “Maybe because we use English too, sometimes it is still stiff and the delivery of the content is still lacking.” In addition, because lectures are still running online due to the pandemic, monitoring the program is also more difficult than offline.

Yudhis as the Chief of String Movie Maniac for the 2020/2021 period also hopes that this podcast will continue until the next stewardship period, and they can make new division in charge of managing podcasts. For his own stewardship period, he has a goal of publishing 12 podcast episodes and is now moving on to the sixth podcast which will be uploaded in the fourth week of June. “For my period, I’m targeting 10-12 episodes. I also hope this podcast will continue, he further added, this plan also depends on the new chairman. If this continues, hopefully a special division can be formed which handles podcasts.” he closed.

Let’s Survive Strongly with “Let’s Start It”

(ELMO’s Latest Single)

Yogyakarta (31/05/2021) – English Letters Music Organization, well-known as ELMO, launched their latest single titled “Let’s Start It”. Those who participated in this single are the members from batch ’19. Rizki Aziz Irfansyah Patra and Erika Karina Alyadinda Br. Purba are taking over the vocal position, while Samuel Aristo is the bassist. Ridho Al’piero – The chairman of ELMO – is also participating to be a lead guitarist and David Aristo, on the other hand, is the rhythm guitarist. The keyboard and drum position was taken by the same person, In Sola Fide. This team just made an epic harmonization.

“Let’s Start It” was released around early January this year – 2021. January 1 was for the Music Video – taken in CV CEMERLANG TERUS JAYA Warehouse – and the single itself was on January 29. For this masterpiece, ELMO was given one month at that time, and yes, they greatly managed to finish all the things related to this project only within 3 weeks. What a great teamwork!

The chairman of ELMO – Ridho himself shares with us that the reason behind the title “Let’s Start It” chosen was due to its relation with the meaning of the song. “It’s like a persuasion to start doing something and prove that we can survive strongly to fight and did not give up facing a situation like the one that’s happening now– pandemic.” He tries to explain how this song is relatable to what happens around us nowadays.

Ridho and all the ELMO’s members hope that the listeners will love this song and understand the meaning of the song. “Not to be biased, but if I, myself, wasn’t a member of ELMO and the single-making team, as a music lover I would have said things like “Wow… Not bad” or like “Magnificent!” something like that, as the right expression to describe how I feel about this single. TMI, in the process of making it, I talk with my inner self like “yeah you’re gonna love it” so I hope you guys too.”

ELMO hopes that this song can motivate those who listen to this single to take great action and survive during this hard time. As Ridho said before the closing, “We are allowed to cry, it’s okay, but just do not give up.” So, let’s start support ELMO by enjoying their music legally on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, Tidal, Deezer, Napster, Claro Mùsica, and Shazam. Let’s start it!

Dalan Mehuli Perangin Angin: From the local ones, to the global ones

Born in Fak-Fak, Papua, and raised in Brebes, Central Java, Mr. Dalan Mehuli Perangin-angin has been quite a nomadent since a very young age. This peculiarity allowed him to be exposed to the diverse perspectives, cultures, and especially, languages from time to time.

While looking back, Mr. Dalan admits that he indeed always favors study languages, especially the local ones. Javanese, Ngapak, Malay Palembang, and Papuan are some of numerous local languages that he is fluent in.

The USD English Letters’ alumnee shared with us that he was once jokingly aspiring to speak one hundred languages, but precisely, he had never dreamed to be a linguist. His current career is rather a life calling that had never been imagined nor planned before.

At the following year after graduated, the gentleman of Karo descent initiated his career as a research assistant at Jakarta Field Station, Max Planc Institute (a German-based institute which focuses on the language research) which turned out, opened him a new page. His strong interest in linguistic research, allowed him to travel as far as Utretch, Netherlands and Hong Kong, China to pursue his master and doctoral degree in language study accordingly which further assured his path as a linguist. He attained realization during his academic years, that it is crucial for Indonesian ourselves to employ our own certain approach in studying our language, especially in the midst of recurring Eurocentric frameworks which still denotes the study of the local languages.

In Jakarta Field Station, Mr. Dalan started his contribution in a rather contemporary discipline: the documentation of languages. He told us that there are more than 800 languages around the globe that are currently in danger.  In the spher of Indonesia, the languages of Eastern Indonesia or what so called as Non-Austronesian languages or Papuan languages are losing its speakers significantly. Mr. Dalan’s focus is to documentate these endangered languages, so that the future generations could stay in touch with the footprints and preserve the language.  One of the Papuan languages that Mr. Dalan focused in his research is Pagu language, a minority language spoken in Halmahera (Molucca), which proposals later brought him to his doctoral study.

After frequently moving from place to place as a researcher, in 2018, Mr. Dalan decided to settle. He decided to return to the place where he spent the rest of his undergraduate days, The English Letters Department USD, to teach younger students. Being a teacher in our department doesn’t equal leaving the research field for Mr. Dalan. He believes in “Tri Dharma”, that one (an academician) is supposed to hold: pedagogy, research, and community dedication. It was pretty foreign for Mr. Dalan to teach in the classroom at first as his early background is a field researcher, but in the end, the linguist is meant to adapt. He also points out regarding the aspect of contribution that it is indeed as significant as other aspects. Currently, he with other lecturers are planning on the project to do English training for Indonesian migrant workers in Hong Hong.

In correlation with Integrity’s current theme of “Serendipity”, Mr. Dalan is glancing back to his older days, that in the midst of every struggle, one, at the end, could achieve the confidence and success. It is the numerous challenges that made one could encounter a good thing in the end, indeed, with the hardworks of difficult times. He never thought that he would return to Jogja, during his academic journey. He points out that it is important to remain adaptable wherever he goes, including respecting the locals with distinct norms and cultures in different places. In the end, Mr. Dalan wishes the success for every English Letters’ students. He believes that with the background in English language and literature, one could deliver their aspiration and knowledge to the whole world, out there, while it’s also very noteworthy to remain in touch with our local cultures and background. Let’s wish Mr. Dalan every happiness and success in his future endeavour!

The subtle art of not giving a F***

Title: The subtle art of not giving a F*** (Sebuah seni untuk bersikap bodo amat)

Author: Mark Manson

Despite the title, the inside of the book is really the opposite. This book is not about not caring about things, but rather it asks you about what you care about the most and the reason behind it. According to the author himself, this book is about value. He said that he wanted it to be contradictory to the self-help industry. Most of self-help industry assume that your end goal is to have a perfect marriage, have children, live in nice house, etc. Instead, in this book, Mark Manson wants to point out that there are many definition of success and some of them may not be suited for you. He said that the important thing is getting head in life is not just figuring out how to accomplish goals you have, it’s more of asking what goals we should have and what thing we need to care about.

This book is divided into 5 chapters and each chapters of this book gives different value. Every value given by this book is pointing out the theme of this book, which is “negativity is the path to positivity”. The first value given by this book is comfortable for being different. Not caring doesn’t mean you are indifferent, it means that you are just doing something with your own ways. The author, Mark Manson said that if you give an f about nothing, that means you are giving an f about not giving an f, therefore indifferent is impossible. You just need to know what you need to give a f about. The second value is about the problem with happiness. To make it easier to understand, I will give an example about my hobby related to this value. In a game with a lot RNG in general, there are 2 types of player regarding their account. The first one is the one who always be grateful, either for a character, weapon, gear, etc. and the one who never get satisfied. People tend to always find happiness, but what happened when that person reach their goal? Mostly there is nothing, people just find another goal. When you reach your end goal, there are only dead end, but when you keep struggling there you will get more joy. Try to ask yourself “what am I willing to suffer for?” rather than “what do I want to become?” The 3rd value is no one is special. You are not special, he, she, everyone, they are not special, everyone is the same. Mark Manson said that something like ads or social media algorithm is not healthy because it is pushing you to feel you are the most special person. That can make a delusional person think that they are the exception and everything will arrange towards you, that’s what make it socially and mentally not healthy. The 4th and 5th values are about choices and related to each other. The 4th one hardly asks you what you need to care about, because if you have ambition but have the wrong goal, you are screwed. Lastly the 5th value is you are always choosing. It is no matter how good or bad the situation and your decision, you are always choosing. It is just whether you are admit it or not. But, human instinct may have reflect won’t to admit if they choose a bad decision. They will just blame it to something or someone.

If you want a self-improvement book, but you don’t like a conventional method that probably makes you think that you are very special, this book is for you. The beauty of this book is related to the theme “serendipity.” But in this case, it may already have happened without you realizing, you just need to look back and find it. The downside of this book, which I’m not sure it is a good thing or not, but because this book sells as a self-improvement book, I can see why people hate it, is this book’s tone is really casual. It is like you just sit in a café with the author and he tells you a story. Also as the tittle implied, there is a lot of f bomb and cursing in this book. But, for me it is fine.

Especially in this covid era, which I just assume that you are still staying to study, you may have several depression about this online classes, probably nonsense amount of assignment, and you probably cannot do the things you like and you just want to ignore everything and have fun. But, if you still survive, fight the struggle and enjoy the process, it is one of the good thing (I guess).

The Warmest Hello from Your Most Beloved

I found a way to let you win
But I never really had a doubt
Standing in the light of your halo
I got my angel now

Are you familiar with the song lyrics from above? The song above was performed by a famous American singer. Beyonce Giselle Knowles or better known by her stage name, Beyonce, recorded this song in 2008. Then, this song, “Halo”, was released on February 20, 2009. This song is very popular among young people because the music sounds cheerful and the lyrics are quite touching. In fact, “Halo” spent 31 weeks on the top 100 billboards in 2009 and its music video reached 1 billion views.

This song tells the story of a girl who had closed her heart tightly to anyone. She built walls and space for herself. She was too tired because she was getting a lot of bad treatment from the environment and people around her. She no longer wants to deal with the people around her by involving her heart. We’ve been like that too, haven’t we? We have felt hurt and disappointed because of the environment or people closest to us. We may or have closed the door of our hearts to others because we are too tired and disgusted by all the disappointment and sadness they keep giving us. However, believe me, all the disappointments and sadness that we have experienced do not always have bad ending.

In the song “Halo”, this girl finally finds happiness, the person she loves and loves her the most, even though she never thought of finding it. This girl didn’t think of finding someone who would understand her at all because she believed it was impossible. However, as in the lyrics “I got my angel now”, this girl managed to find someone who was very precious to her without even looking for it. She finally found someone who can give her happiness and can make her life more meaningful. She doesn’t need to worry about anything else because she has got a gift that gives her the strength to be able to run her day, no matter how bad it is.

In our life, we must have experienced this too. When we are really in a bad state, even without us asking or looking, there must be people closest to us who will give their love and attention to us. They indirectly provide enthusiasm and strength for us to live life as bad as it is. Spending time with someone we loved is really fun and happy, right? Therefore, don’t waste people who really love you. Stay cheerful in living your days, and don’t forget to always take care of yourself too!
